A Day of Catalan Culture
-Visit a family-owned vineyard with wine tasting
- Learn about and participate in a traditional Catalan Human Tower
Heading to the lush wine region of Penedés or Alella, you will drive past the crowded large-scale wineries to a small family-owned organic vineyard where a member of the family will walk you past rows of vines while explaining the growing process and the importance of using organic agricultural practices. Then, follow them down into the cellar and, humbled by the giant wine barrels housing wines of varying maturity waiting to be swirled, sipped and savored, you will learn about the wine-making process from first-press to fermentation. To top it all off, you get to taste three different wines/cavas to gain a full understanding of how the steps you have just seen gives each its unique flavor, aroma and color.
Waving goodbye to your vineyard guide and their family, you head to the practice center of one of the famed Catalan Human Tower groups (Castellers) and learn about the time-honored Catalan tradition that was named a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. On your way, you will stop at a local village where your guide will tip you on the best restaurants or you might even have the chance to enjoy a meal with the Castallers. After dinner, at the practice center, you will watch members of the local community, both young and old, come together with precision and concentration to build the multi-story human towers (Castells). Watch the Castellers climb higher and higher until a brave, helmet-clad child (the "enxaneta") scampers up to the very top and stretches out their arm, raising 4 fingers to the sky to represent the Catalan flag. Not only will you get to see some of the world´s best human tower builders, but you have the chance to put on a traditional casteller outfit and be part of the tower yourself!
If you come along on a Sunday, you will enjoy a morning vineyard tour before heading to a nearby town for their “Festa Major” to see the Castellers in action.
This is a once in a lifetime chance to be part of real Catalan culture.
